I've Crossed Over

There is a very fine line that each of us must some day cross. Scattered throughout our lives, through periods of growth and development, we reach new stages in life where we can officially tout that we have stepped into a new arena. We are ready to face the new challenges that are set before us. We have accepted that life continues forward and in that moment of realization, we accept what we can not change and make the most out whatever it is that life has dealt our hand.
One of these lines that are crossed, comes when we realize we are no longer young. Maturity has made its mark on our bodies, and reaches a point where it just pushes our body and allows it to start gathering momentum down the other side of the aging hill.
You never know when that line will be crossed. It may sneak up on you, like a thief in the night. It may come at you boldly in the full light of day. However it decides to come, it will come...and when it does, you will know it.
Today I was getting my haircut. I had a sweet Asian woman that didn't speak English very well. When I first sat down, she ran her fingers through my hair and said, "You no have much here." I had already accepted that my hair had decided to make a retreat in a most rapid movement...however, it wasn't until halfway through the haircut, as she ever so gently trimmed the hair around and in my ear, that I finally realized...
I had crossed the line.

I once worked for a dentist and an elderly Asian woman came in to get some work done. She had been a patient to this dentist for a long time. When the dentist walked into the room, she spread her arms out and said, "You gain, you gain." She proceeded to let him know that he had gotten quite fat since her last visit. I had to bite my lip to keep from smiling! But what is it with Asian women pointing out these unwanted truths?

Anyway, you are what, 32? A little hair loss hardly qualifies you as getting old. I think you are still headed uphill :)

In the profound words of Grandma Striegel: "You're as old as you feel." You aren't old until you decide you are, Zach.

Yeah, I was reading a textbook one time that categorized middle age as 35-45. That's when I crossed the line-heck I'm nearly middle aged!

You know...it wasn't really the thinning hair...(after all, I have more hair than my two younger brothers)...It was the ear hair. And the fact that she trimmed it. Middle age...wow...does this mean I can buy a sports car?

Maybe one day it will be the nose hair.

Didn't you already get a trimmer one year for Christmas, I think I am remembering that correctly. I am pretty sure that was your favorite present ever! This is Mandy, just in case you didn't know.

Dude, I know exactly what you are talking about! It's so weird, but lately I've been coming to the same horrific realization. There are certain landmarks you don't think you'll ever reach...the 15 year high school reunion. Returned from mission ten years ago (and I'm a chick, so I was old when I left!!) Graduated from college ten years ago. And the list goes on. Yikes!
